Glass blown objects are designed and produced in the studio.

Three ovens are necessary to produce one glass object.

The Furnace

The furnace is an electric oven that operates 24 hours a day at 2100°F and contains melted glass. The glass is in liquid form at this temperature and is ready to be shaped by the artisan.

The Glory Hole

During the production process, the artisan uses this propane gas oven to reheat objects that have cooled to keep them malleable for a longer period.

Annealing Oven

Completed works must be stored overnight in this electric oven to allow them to gradually cool. Without this step the glass object would break.

The Method

A hollow metal rod is used to gather a ball of glass in the furnace. The artisan blows into the rod and shapes the glass using wooden and steel tools. Colour is added a little at a time during this process.  When completed, the object is stored overnight in the annealing oven to remove the stress. Once the object has cooled completely, the finishing stage begins during which the glassblower uses grinding and polishing tools to level and smooth the base of the object.

A viewing area allows visitors to observe the artisans at work and the equipment they use.  As well, visitors can learn from interpretation panels that describe the glassblowing process in detail. An enriching experience for the whole family!
